Acne: Prevention and Treatment
Just as an individual steps into teenage, he enters a world of new experiences. Some experiences are
enriching and life changing while some leave a bitter taste. Major physiological changes also mark the
onset of puberty along with hormonal changes. One of the major developments, acne, affects the male
and female alike and continues till adulthood.
When the sebaceous gland secretes excess oil and clogs the pore or minute hair follicles, it leads to
acne. Excessive stress and incorrect diet pattern aggravates the problem of acne as it triggers excess oil
production.
While acne is a common skin disease, it is usually accompanied by irritation, pain, inflammation etc. One
can actually take precautions to lessen the outbreak of acne. Some of the common precautions are:
Washing the face frequently in a day with warm water and a mild cleanser in order to keep the
skin surface clean and prevent oil build up.
Keeping one’s hair away from the face and wash it regularly, so that oil in the hair does not
affect the face.
Not touching the face or indulge in squeezing, popping and scratching the pimples as they can
lead to spreading of the infection.
Avoiding intake of excess oily and spicy food as well as reducing consumption of sweets.
Prevention, though imperative, does not guarantee complete relief from acne. Acne still requires cure
either through over the counter medicines or through prescribed drugs by dermatologists. Most of the
anti acne treatment involves local application of creams, ointments or cleansers. One of the most used
anti acne solutions are creams containing mandelic acid and salicylic acid as the key ingredients.
Mandelic acid: Mandelic Acid is a bitter almond extract and a milder form of alpha-hydroxy
acid" (AHA). It is a complete skin care solution which cures on various skin concerns including
acne, blemishes and pigmentation. It is less irritable as compared to glycolic peels and its anti
bacterial properties prevent the recurrence of acne.
Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) and specializes in anti acne treatment
due to its ability to penetrate the follicle. It encourages exfoliation and keeps the cellular debris
clean, thus reducing pore blockages.
